Blackfriars is just a nickname!
The Dominican Monks were called Blackfriars because of the colour of their habits.
The Blackfriars had another nickname too!
Their name gave rise to the pun that they were Domini canes, or 'Hounds of the Lord'.
Geoffrey was quite the traveller!
We know less than we would like about Geoffrey, but we do know he lived for a long time in France and is believed to have travelled to the East.
Henry III granted permission for some Dominican monks to construct a dwelling using an old tower as a base, it was called the Priory of St. Saviour.
Geoffrey of Waterford was living at Blackfriars and was a member of the Dominican Order.
The Monastery was dissolved and ownership taken by private gentleman. This was due to Henry VIII’s actions in reformingthe English Catholic Church.
